Caballero production began in 1971 as the GMC Sprint; in 1978 it was completely redesigned and renamed. It was the sister car of the Chevy El Camino automobile; part passenger car and part truck. The Caballero was designed atop the GM A Platform and shared components with the mid-sized Chevy Malibu vehicle. Commonly found in Chevy and GMC vehicles, each was nearly impossible to differentiate other than the different name plates. The Caballero is far more rare than the El Camino and is often considered a collector's vehicle. An exclusive trim model called the Diablo was available for a time, and copied the hood of the GMC Trans Am, which showcased a large demon graphic. The Caballero came with both V6 and V8 engines attached to a three speed automatic transmission producing around 150 hp depending on the options. The Caballero was discontinued in due to poor sales and the phasing out of the Chevy brand El Camino.
