DESCRIPTION

Debuting in 1995, the Acura RL was Acura’s flagship sedan. It replaced the very popular Acura legend beginning with the 1996 model year. This sedan was designed to compete with the BMW 5-series and the Lexus GS. Acura based the RL on the Honda Legend platform. The RL stands for “refined luxury” and all model years of the RL provide that. The first generation of the RL was designated the 3.5RL. The sedan featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine that was mounted longitudinally. This gave the car a smaller turning radius. In spite of its size, the 3.5RL was surprisingly maneuverable. The 1999 model got a makeover with a new front grille, integrated foglights and other cosmetic changes. The 2002 model got a new engine that produced 225 horsepower. In 2005, Acura launched the second generation of the RL. Like its predecessor, the new RL’s featured a body style that was more conservative than the Acura TL and TSX sedans. Although it lacked a V8, it did include Acura’s Super Handling-All Wheel Drive system. The V6 engine was upgraded to an engine that produced 300 horsepower. Owners of both generations of the Acura RL report several common problems with the car’s radiator. Cracks in the radiator cap or on the radiator’s plastic housing are common.
